Join Our Exams Team at Backwell School
Backwell School is seeking an organised, enthusiastic and highly detail-oriented Deputy Exams Officer to join our dedicated Exams Team.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys working collaboratively, and takes pride in ensuring that important processes run smoothly and accurately.
The Deputy Exams Officer plays a vital role in supporting the administration and delivery of all internal and external examinations, ensuring compliance with Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations and awarding body requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with the Exams Officer and act as a key point of contact for students, parent/carers, school staff and invigilators.
The successful candidate will need to be flexible with regard to working hours. Exam days can be long (7.30 am – 6.00 pm), but there will be scope to work fewer hours during quieter periods.
About the Role
Key responsibilities include:
• Supporting the planning, administration and organisation of examinations throughout the academic year.
• Producing examination timetables, seating plans and candidate information.
• Coordinating access arrangements and special consideration requests.
• Managing examination materials securely and in accordance with regulations.
• Assisting with the recruitment, training and coordination of invigilators.
• Supporting the preparation, release and distribution of examination results.
• Responding effectively to unexpected issues and examination irregularities.
• Deputising for the Exams Officer when required.
Working Pattern
This post is offered on an annualised-hours basis, equivalent to 30 hours per week over 49 weeks of the year.
The role offers flexibility, with fewer hours worked during quieter periods and increased hours required during key examination and results periods. We would welcome applications from candidates seeking some flexibility in the advertised hours, depending on experience and suitability for the role.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
• Has excellent organisational and administrative skills.
• Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Has strong IT skills, including experience with Microsoft Office applications, and a willingness to learn new software packages.
• Communicates effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Remains calm under pressure and can manage competing priorities.
• Works proactively and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Leadership skills (for managing invigilation team).
Experience in examination administration or working within an educational setting would be advantageous, although training will be provided for the right candidate.
Applying
Please submit your application via the Lighthouse Schools Partnership recruitment portal. Applications should demonstrate how you meet the essential and desirable criteria outlined in the person specification.
Start Date: January 2027 , with opportunity for handover work in December 2026, depending on candidate availability and pre-employment checks.
